The DBM welcomes Andrea Ottolini-Voellmy as DBM head operations
I was born and raised in Basel. After high school, I got a diploma as executive assistant and studied social anthropology, sociology and MGU at the University of Basel. After several professional stages in the private industry, I have been working at the University of Basel for almost 17 years. I was coordinator of a summer school, Managing Director of a national competence center in energy research and Managing Director of the Research Network Sustainable Future.
Dear Andrea
Congratulations on your new job. We would like to ask you few questions to introduce yourself and get to know you better.
1. Did you already know the Department of Biomedicine?
Yes, I knew the DBM. As it is often mentioned in the “Uninews” with contributions from research. That is where I have read about the DBM and learned about interesting research results.
2. What was the motivation for you to apply for this position at DBM?
The job advertisement appealed to me very much and I could identify with the tasks and requirements. As the Managing Director of a research consortium, I had worked in a similar position for several years. I saw the opportunity to tackle a challenge in a new research field, to contribute my skills and competencies and to further develop myself.
3. Which three characteristics distinguish you in particular?
Loyalty, commitment and sense of responsibility.
4. What are your expectations for your new task?
I expect a position with an exciting range of tasks, many new people and research projects as well as numerous diverse challenges. I am very curious and highly motivated to start the position as Managing Director at the DBM.
5. Which three things are particularly important to you for your new role?
Respectful interaction is very important to me in my everyday and my professional life, I hope for that in the DBM as well. Second, it will be central for this job to build up a mutual relationship of trust with the management of the department and the entire team. Third, I like clear structures, organization processes and responsibilities, because they simplify the daily routine at work enormously.
Finally two personal questions.
6. What is you preferred holiday destination and why?
Many years ago, I have lost my heart to Latin America – especially Central America and Ecuador. This has not changed until today, even though I have rarely found the opportunity to travel back there in recent years. Here in Europe I like Greece and Spain; overall I love the sea and the view onto the horizon.
7. What makes you laugh?
This is a nice question; I like laughing. I probably laugh most about funny everyday situations, while watching a good comedy or generally with my daughter.

Ich bin in Basel geboren und aufgewachsen. Nach der Matur habe ich eine Ausbildung zur Direktionsassistentin absolviert und danach an der Universität Basel Ethnologie, Soziologie und MGU studiert. Nach mehreren beruflichen Stationen in der Privatwirtschaft, arbeite ich nun seit fast 17 Jahren an der Universität Basel. Ich war Koordinatorin einer Summer School, Geschäftsführerin eines nationalen Konsortiums in der Energieforschung und Geschäftsführerin des Forschungsnetzwerks Sustainable Future.

Wir gratulieren Dir zu deiner neuen Arbeitsstelle. Gerne möchten wir Dir ein paar Fragen stellen, um Dich vorzustellen und besser kennen zu lernen.
1. War Dir das Departement Biomedizin bereits bekannt?
Ja, ich kannte das DBM. Vor allem, da es öfter in den «Uninews» mit Beiträgen aus der Forschung erwähnt wird. So habe ich immer mal wieder über das DBM gelesen und interessante Forschungsergebnisse erfahren.
2. Was war der Anreiz Dich für diese Stelle bei uns am DBM zu bewerben?
Das Stelleninserat hat mich sehr angesprochen und ich konnte mich gut mit den Aufgaben und Anforderungen identifizieren. Als Geschäftsführerin eines Forschungskonsortiums war ich mehrere Jahre in einer ähnlichen Funktion tätig. Ich sah hier die Chance, eine Herausforderung in einem neuen Forschungsumfeld anzugehen, meine Fähigkeiten und Kompetenzen einzubringen und mich weiterzuentwickeln.
3. Welche drei Eigenschaften zeichnen Dich besonders aus?
Loyalität, Engagement und Verantwortungsbewusstsein.
4. Mit welchen Erwartungen gehst Du an die neue Aufgabe heran?
Ich erwarte eine Stelle mit spannender Aufgabenpalette, vielen neuen Menschen und Forschungsprojekten wie auch zahlreichen vielseitigen Herausforderungen. Ich bin sehr gespannt und sehr motiviert die Geschäftsführungsposition im DBM zu übernehmen.
5. Welche drei Dinge sind Dir für deine neue Aufgabe besonders wichtig?
Ein respektvoller Umgang ist mir im Alltags- sowie im Berufsleben sehr wichtig, dies wünsche ich mir auch im DBM. Zweitens wird es für meine Aufgabe zentral sein, ein gegenseitiges Vertrauensverhältnis mit der Departementsleitung und dem gesamten Team aufzubauen. Als Drittes mag ich klare Strukturen, Organisationsabläufe und Zuständigkeiten, da sie den Arbeitsalltag enorm vereinfachen.
Zuletzt noch zwei persönliche Fragen.
6. Welches ist dein bevorzugtes Ferienland und warum?
Ich habe vor vielen Jahren mein Herz an Lateinamerika – insbesondere an Zentralamerika und Ecuador - verloren. Dies hat sich bis heute nicht geändert, auch wenn ich in den letzten Jahren nur noch selten die Möglichkeit gefunden habe, dorthin zurückzureisen. Hier in Europa mag ich Griechenland und Spanien sehr; grundsätzlich liebe ich das Meer und den Blick auf den Horizont.
7. Worüber kannst Du herzlich lachen?
Das ist eine schöne Frage; ich lache gerne. Am meisten lache ich wohl über lustige Alltagssituationen, beim Schauen einer guten Komödie oder ganz grundsätzlich im Alltag mit meiner Tochter.
