The Niess lab found that expression levels of the cytokine IL-19 are increased in ulcerative colitis patients and in a mouse model.
They hypothesise that microbial-driven IL-19 expression by intestinal macrophages can lead to inflammatory bowel disease. Their findings were recently published in The Journal of Immunology.
