From environmental organisms to human lung pathogens: Understanding pathogenic evolution in bacteria.

His basic research is focused on understanding: how bacteria evolve from environmental organisms into specialist lung pathogens (Science 2016, 2021a, 2021b, 2024a, 2024b; Nature Microbiology 2021, 2022, 2025); how they interact with ,and are shaped by, the innate immune system (Science 2006, 2014; EMBO MM 2015, Cell Reports 2025); and how functional genomics and machine learning can be combined with fragment-based drug discovery to develop novel antibiotics (funded by Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, UK Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust, US CF Foundation, Shionogi, GSK, AZ).

His clinical research is centred around novel therapies for Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) and Pseudomonas infections, tackling chronic inflammation in CF and non-CF bronchiectasis, and using AI to understand and predict pulmonary exacerbations (funded by LifeArc & NIHR). Clinically he specialises in the management of Nontuberculous mycobacteria, Cystic Fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, and recurrent chest infections.
