We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Magdalena Sznurkowska as a new research group leader at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Basel. She will join our Department on May 1, 2026, where she will establish the Metastasis Biology Lab, supported by a prestigious ERC Starting Grant.
Her research focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that drive cancer metastasis. In particular, Prof. Sznurkowska aims to identify the factors that determine organ-specific metastatic spread and to characterise how tumor cells behave dynamically within different tissue niches. By combining her expertise in cell fate tracking with in-depth studies of the metastatic cascade, her group will explore how tumor cells interact with and adapt to distant microenvironments.
A central goal of her work is to uncover how these tumor cell–niche interactions influence cancer progression and to reveal novel vulnerabilities that could be targeted therapeutically. Through this approach, the Sznurkowska Lab seeks to contribute to a deeper mechanistic understanding of metastasis and to open up new avenues for intervention in cancer treatment.
We are very pleased to welcome Magda to the DBM and look forward to the innovative research and collaborations her group will bring to our community.
