Welcome to the Team – Pietro Cippà Lab!

Professor Dr. Pietro Cippà has been appointed Professor of Nephrology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel and Head of the Nephrology Laboratory at the DBM. He will also head the Department of Nephrology and Transplant Immunology at the University Hospital of Basel.
His research focuses on the cellular mechanisms of tissue repair in the kidney and the interactions between the kidney and the immune system. His recent discoveries have elucidated fundamental mechanisms or renal repair, such as the role of the transcription factor SOX9, and the impact of renal metabolism in acute kidney injury. In Basel, the team will focus on the molecular processes that control tubular cell redifferentiation and on understanding on how cell state transitions affect the renal microenvironment. The ultimate goal is to develop targeted therapies to promote kidney regeneration in aging, kidney disease and after transplantation.
In parallel, his lab will continue to work toward immunosuppression-free kidney transplantation, a concept known as tolerance. They will refine the only strategy that has been shown to be effective in achieving tolerance in patients: combined bone marrow and kidney transplantation from the same donor.
The laboratory is integrated into the division of Transplantation Immunology and Nephrology at the University Hospital of Basel, fostering close interaction between research and clinical practice. The commitment to this symbiotic relationship between the laboratory and the clinic underscores our dedication to improving patient outcomes through cutting-edge research and innovation in nephrology.
